I lie stunned for some moments, just breathing. With each deep inhale, I hold my breath for as long as I can before letting it out in a gust of air. My eyes are closed tight, and every sense vibrates with so much fear that I cannot feel anything else.

Slowly my heartbeat calms. Awareness creeps back in around the edges . . . enough that I realize my skirts are no longer on fire. Odd. Cringing, I peel my eyes open and look at my body, my clothes. My skirt is tattered, exposing my bare legs far more than is decent. My skin is red and raw in places where tongues of flame licked too close.

But I’m not actively on fire. So that’s something.

Gathering my courage, I turn my head to take in the world around me. Immediately I wish I hadn’t. I’m on a path all right, one of the strange Hinter paths leading through folds of reality. Of that there is no doubt.

But it’s quite different from the other strange ways along which Brielle led me! Those always seemed to lead through forest. Although at the edges of my vision I sometimes glimpsed great sweeping expanses, my more immediate perceptions saw tall trees and green growth around me.

Here, there is no forest.

I lie stretched out on a gleaming strip of what appears to be glinting granules of stardust extending endlessly before me. I scramble up to my hands and knees, then let out a gasp. I pull it back. The urge to curl into a frozen ball of horror takes hold, and it’s all I can do to resist it. Instead, I force myself to look, to see where exactly I’ve come.

To my right is darkness—deep, impenetrable darkness, a perfect oblivion. To my left, light. Radiant, melting, endless light. Both feel terribly far away, as though I would have to fall for a hundred years before plunging into them. But they are there, nonetheless, waiting to claim me for the sin of one false step.

I swallow hard and look out along the path before me. It leads between those two extremes in a straight line, slightly uphill. The moon hovers to my right, a huge silvery orb, much closer than I’ve ever seen it at home. The sun, blessedly not so near, is suspended opposite on my left, and their combined brilliance makes the stardust path gleam like millions of diamonds.

“Between Sun and Moon lies the path to Druindar,” I whisper, recalling Brielle’s words. “Between Candlelight and Shadow lies the road to Hell.”

Slowly I rise to my feet. The path is solid, but I sway dizzyingly even so, my stomach pitching with dread. I lift my foot and take a step. Then another. And another. My heart races, still thrilling at my close encounter with the unicorns. Gods above, was
